Learning About Breast CancerIt is not recommended. Chemo effects rapidly dividing cells. It is unknown what the effects of chemo have on a developing fetus. Please use precautions. It's especially import during the first trimester. Women have been treated later in pregnancy. Good luck

Hi Tawonna. This is what I found on the American Cancer Society:
"Chemo usually is not given during the first 3 months of pregnancy (the first trimester). This is because most of the fetus’s internal organs develop during this time. The risk of miscarriage (losing the baby) is also the greatest during the first trimester. The safety of chemo during this time has not been studied because of concerns about damage to the fetus.
It was once thought that all chemo drugs would harm the fetus. But studies have shown that certain chemo drugs used during the second and third trimesters (the fourth through ninth months of pregnancy) do not raise the risk of birth defects, stillbirths, or health problems shortly after birth. But researchers still do not know whether these children will have any long-term effects.
When a pregnant woman with early breast cancer needs adjuvant chemo after surgery, it’s usually delayed until at least the second trimester. If a woman is already in her third trimester when the cancer is found, the chemo may be delayed until after birth. The birth may be induced (brought on) a few weeks early in these cases. Depending on the extent of the cancer, these same treatment plans may also be used for women whose disease is more advanced.
Chemo should not be given 3 to 4 weeks before delivery. This is because one side effect of chemo is that it lowers the mother’s blood counts. This could cause bleeding and increase the chances of infection during birth. Holding off on chemo for the last few weeks before delivery allows the mother’s blood counts to return to normal levels before childbirth."
I have read about several women who have delivered healthy babies after having chemo. Best wishes to you. :)

Hi Skyeler, I'm so sorry you're going through this. It's tough enough having breast cancer but you also have a little one to think of which puts a whole new spin on things. I visit another board that has several women who have gone through chemo during their pregnancy and came out on the other side. We are all very supportive here and I hope someone here will have a story to share with you as well. The other site is called breastcancer.org. Awesome discussion group with lots of young moms & women who had their treatments while pregnant. Much love & lots of hugs Skyeler.

Oh my goodness. I was 4 weeks post partum when I found my lump, and my baby was 8 weeks old when I started treatment. I dont know where you live, but I would get multiple opinions to make sure you and your baby are getting the right treatment. I suggest getting involved in a support group, talking to a counselor maybe, continue talking to us on these websites. I have a friend who was 7 months pregnant when she found her lump and all are doing well now. She had chemo during pregnancy as well. Hang in there...,let that baby give you your strength to fight this awful disease. I found my baby helped me get through treatment so much because I know he needed his mom!! Thinking of you and stay strong to win!

During pregnancy your body produces more estrogen and progesterone. If you have a estrogen feeding tumor it may also grow. Other options maybe to harvest your eggs and freeze them for later use. I have heard of women that have gotten pregnant soon after stopping tamoxifen almost like when stopping BCP's. Hard decisions to make. Take care
I am 30 and wanting kids...I asked my oncologist that question every appointment and he never recommends it....he said it is a personal choice and a risk I'd have to take if I did get pregnant. But all of my doctors are against it. It's just a personal choice I guess. :(

Learning About Breast CancerStephanieKay,
I think this question is best posed to your Ob/Gyn. (Did you have breast cancer??) Nobody can predict if any type of cancer will return. It depends on the type of cancer, and many other factors.
Good luck, Sharon
I agree with Traciann and anonymous....a surrogate (or gestational carrier) can carry a baby that is your and your husband's. And I also think carrying a baby with 1/2 a uterus may be tricky. I am sure there are options for you!

Rebecca, I am so sorry for what you are going through. I would take a lot of time making decisions, and get a lot of professional advice. Once you know the stage, grade, oncotype score this may help you decide on your treatment. I think that surgery, either partial or mastectomy is an option. Depending on tumor's aggressiveness, you might be able to have chemo during the last half of the pregnancy. Look under the learn section on this site, there is a chapter about bc during pregnancy . Look under topics too, there might be info there. And I know there are other women on here who have dealt with this , and I hope they will respond. Blessing to you.
Oh I am so sorry this is happening to you!!!!!!!! Get advice from best cancer clinic you can find-- UCSF, MD Anderson, Mayo Clinic...
