While a bilateral mastectomy is still an option than many women choose, it is not alway the choice. In some cases, a single breast mastectomy is recomended to speed the process of treatment and then the woman is give the option to remove the second breast during reconstruction. There are some, like myself who live with one breast.

Hello, The option for removing both breasts is there. It can be a difficult decision to make. Some things to consider are risk factors for getting cancer again, and discussing this with your oncologist. some choose to have both breasts removed for cosmetic reasons since symmetry can be an issue for reconstruction if only one breast is removed. Reasons women may choose not to have both breasts removed include loosing the ability to breastfeed and loosing feeling (good bye to sexual stimulation after mastectomy) in the noncancerous breast.

Dear Sharon, Yes some women feel like they need to have them removed, especially if it runs I'n your family, but I asked that question about both breast and my doctor said no not for me because my breast cancer was ductal and there is another type of breast cancer where they know for a fact it will spread to the other one. I talked to a nurse that had both of her breast was removed and asked her should I had both of mine removed and she told me no, but she explained hers definitely was a different kind of breast cancer. My breast cancer is the most kind that women have.
