As you can see, it depends on what your employer offers. I was fortunate. I initially went on short-term disability, then onto long-term disability. FMLA, or "Family Medical Leave Act," is a federal law that requires employers to give you 12 weeks' leave for certain medical reasons. You won't lose your job during that time. However, there is no requirement that your employer has to pay you for the 12 weeks.
Most states also have disability. It's not as much as a private plan through you employer, but it's something.
