I'm facing My first round of chemo at end of April .. Does one gain weight from the steroids ? Should I try to loose a few pounds before just in case ? I heard weight gain attributes to estrogen levels increasing .. I'm estrogen and Her2 positive ,...

Hi Celien, I'm sorry to hear about you diagnosis. Most of us here have been in your shoes. Yes, steroids given during chemo can make you gain weight. I gained weight, but some women don't. My Onc. Told me she'd rather see me gain than lose. I'm estrogen positive as well...but HER neg. I have two more radiation treatments left & I'll begin slowly getting the weight off. I really don't think it's a good idea to lose weight before chemo. But I'd ask your Oncologist for their advice.

For me the steroids helped me keep the weight on, chemo would have had me frail thin.

Steroids? I am preparing to start chemo, and have heard nothing of steroids. Is this part of all the chemo regimes?

The steroids are to ward off serious side affects of the chemo. I couldn't talk them out of it.

Thanku everyone for your insight .. On the steroid issue .. Realistically if I stay at the weight I am I'll b ok even though I'd like to loose 10 pounds , i have a healthy eating plan in place hope to eat a gluten free sugar free diet and I have a wonderful loving partner who says he will help motivate me to at least walk on the days I don't want to ... One day at a time :-)

I gained about 5 lbs, her2 , steroids to help with making sure no horrible reaction to chemo meds, help with appetite, loss is a bad thing, my oncologist and onc nutritionist says limiting fat intake, to less than 20% daily, but during chemo, eat what u want. People react differently to steroids... But in the end they are given for good reasons ... Good luck!

I gained eighty pounds while being given methotrexate for brain cancer. I have always weighed about 125 and eighty pounds is a lot to gain. I have had both hips replaced due to the steroids so I am I'm item right now in my exercise. I do do to water aerobics six days a week. I have lost about ten pounds in two years. Not nearly enough. I don't know how to get thus weight off.

I meant that I am limited in my exercise, not item.

I was told do what your body tells you to if you feel like do it you will have plenty of days when you won't feel like doing anything beware of pushing yourself too much I did and ended up in hospital for 3 weeks with pnemonia and sepses on the joints doesn't mean you will. Good luck. Wish u well

How we respond to medicine is so individual. I was HER2 ,ER ,PR . I also was given steroids, but my reaction to chemo made it very hard to eat so I lost 25 pounds over the course of 4 months. I would talk to your doctor about your question.

Did you take Herceptin as part of your treatment. Did you have to do radiation ? Could you have avoided radiation if you did a mustoctomy ? I hope you are now healthy and strong. Wish you the best life. Lina

I did 6 rounds of chemo taxater/cytoxan. I had steriods, zofran, compazine, ambien, pain meds, paxil, and other things as side efeccts came up. I gained about 25 lbs. part of that was the only thing I could taste was chocolate.
