I had a a mastectomy 8 days ago. My drains are still in but should be coming out soon. My question is, how long before the take the stitches out and I can stop wearing the wrap around my chest? I think at this point it's the most uncomfortable.

Teri, I would call the surgeon's office and tell them how uncomfortable you are wearing that band. Take care, Sharon

My surgeon used dissolvable sutures inside and glue on the outside covered with steri-strips. The only sutures were holding the drains in place and it was just one in each one. My dressing stayed on until I saw her 5 days after surgery to see about my drains but she opted to leave them in 5 days more even though I had very little drainage, she told me she would rather be safe than possibly having to go back in and put them in again. I'd contact your office about the wrap and sutures and see what they say.

I only wore the chest wrap for 48 hours. I had dissolving strips and stitches so I didn't have them removed. You can shower with the drains in get a lanyard and pin them to the lanyard.

In Australia they do a lot of glueing instead of stitches!!.. So after my Lumpectomy and then a month later my double mastectomy .. They glued !!!... Still have drains .. They believe the would heals better !! And your body is free and you can move easy ... I had some tape over the area straight after the op but that came off the next day ....And no worry about stitchers... And Seroma ( the building up of fluid in the ex boob area that needs to be needle drained out before it becomes infected are are not affected or hindered by stitches).... Last month I had a Total Hysterectomy (keyhole) surgery and again glue !!! ... There would be nothing worse than being bound up around your chest !! You poor girl !!! It must to hard to move or take a breath !! And having a shower !!..... Sorry I cannot help .. But next time ask about glueing!!!::))) good luck with all the next steps of your treatment ...

Thanks Trisha, they won't let me take a shower as long as the drains are in. That is the worst. Sponge baths are not even close to a shower. Ugh They say,as soon as the drains come out I can shower.

What's weird I had my surgery on a Friday but was kept an extra day so on Sunday I asked the nurse aid about getting things together for a sponge bath. She handed me a washrag and towel and when I asked her what I was supposed to do with them she told me I was to take a shower. I still had my surgical dressing on and I told her I didn't think that would be practical so did ask her to at least do my back which she reluctantly did. I did sponge baths at home for a week until the dressing was finally removed.
